Charlemagne (also known as Charles the Great) was a medieval ruler who held the title of King of the Franks from 768 and was crowned as the Holy Roman Emperor in 800. He expanded the Frankish kingdom to cover much of modern-day France, Germany, and Italy, and is often credited with laying the foundations for modern Europe. Charlemagne was a staunch Christian and promoted the spread of Christianity throughout his empire. He also supported learning and the arts, and the period of his rule is considered a time of great cultural and intellectual flourishing in Europe. Charlemagne died on January 28, 814, and was buried in the imperial cathedral at Aachen. He is regarded as one of the most important figures in European history.
